There seems to be an unresolved question as to who the parents of Richard Reginald Mudge were and where and when he was actualy born. We have been unable to find a documented birth record.
We know that in later life Richard Reginald carried the Mudge name and was assumed to be the son of William Chapman Mudge and because of Richard Reginald's assumed age would have been the son of William's first wife Elizabeth Tapley.
When Elizabeth Tapley died in 1884 there was no mention in her obituary of a son.
We have a marriage record for William Chapman Mudge and Elveretta Sturgis and in a 1891 Census of Canada it shows the Mudge family with William age 35, Elveretta age 32, Reginald age 16, Ethel age 4 and Edna age 1.
In an earlier census of 1881 it shows the Sturgis family with Samual age 63, Sarah age 62, Augustus age 26, Elveretta age 23, Elizabeth age 17 and Reginald age 6.
It seems unlikely that Reginald was a son of Elveretta's parents since they are both in their 60s. Since Reginald shows up as a 16 year old ten years later with Elveretta it is assumed that Reginald was her son.
Reginald would have been born when Elveretta was around 17 years old. William Mudge would have been in the general area of the Sturgis family during that time frame so it is possible that he may have been the father.
Family discussions in later years as to the physical similarities and mannerisms between William Chapman Mudge and Richard Reginald Mudge seem to favor the theory that they were father and son. We do not seem to have any father / son photos together but we have several photos that we are unsure which of the 2 is in the photo.
One year after the 1891 census, we see a 1892 marriage certificate that states Richard Reginald is 21 years old (the same age as his spouse).
We celebrated Richard Reginald's birthday as August 30 1871 based on his marriage certificate, but he may have been as much as 4 years younger based on the census.
