When Jackie was 14 years old he begged his parents for a new bike which they finally gave in a bought him. A short while later he ran away from home for the first time riding his bike to Marden across to Maryhill then on to Kitchener. Here he sold his bike as he needed some cash. He then made his way to the Niagara area where the police finally caught up to him in St. Catherines. When he was returned home he was the first of the children to ever get the belt. That belt hung in the kitchen on 14 Clarence Street until the house was sold in 1981. It was never used on any of the kids or grandkids except for Jackie.
