Tryon's Folly was the name given to the house built by Amos Tryon. The house backed onto the steep embankment of the Niagara River, the house was built with a maze of four basement levels that became known as the house with seven cellars. The basement had access to a pathway down to the river.

The Niagara river was narrow and it was just a short rowboat ride to cross into Canada, the house was strategically located to accommodate the transportation of goods back and forth from the river. The Niagara river flows into Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence river and close access to the Erie Canal.

Amos had a younger brother Josiah, who was said to be a Station Master in the Underground Railroad. It is believed that Tryon's Folly was the departure point for hundreds if not thousands of slaves escaping to freedom in Canada.
